The name of the massif could derive from the name of Limes Balares (border of Balari), given to the Roman area, as it constituted the border (Limes Roman) internal to Sardinia between the region inhabited north by Corsi (Gallura) and inhabited by Balari (Monteacuto and the eastern part of Logudoro).
