Historic Ruin: Muiredach’s cross is one of the best examples of ancient medieval sculptures in Ireland. It is made out of sandstone and contains a depiction of the crucifixion on its front. The shaft is richly decorated with biblical images. Although quite rundown, it is an incredible piece of ecclesiastical art and must have been an effective way of teaching the bible to the masses in the past. |

Interesting Place to Visit: Old Mellifont Abbey is the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland. It was founded in 1142 by St Malachy of Armagh. Its most prominent features is an octagonal lavabo in which the monks used to wash their hands. The Visitor Centre also houses a stunning exhibition on the craft works of the Middle Ages masons. |

It is regarded by some people as a jewel in the crown of Ireland's Ancient East and is engraved with extraordinary megalithic art. It was constructed around 3200 B.C by stone age farmers. |
